![]() Sustainability, on the other hand, is the development that meets the needs of the current generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Among many methods, catalysis plays a major role in reducing production costs and boosting reaction efficiency, which will significantly advance the development of human society. Recent years have seen a growing emphasis on utilizing environmentally friendly, efficient, and cost-effective technology to eliminate pollutants, produce clean energy, and synthesize valuable compounds. Industrialization and urbanization have resulted in a significant increase in the consumption of finite fossil fuel reserves, leading to a cascade of environmental issues that pose a considerable threat to human health, environmental preservation, and energy demand. Biodiesel production reached 48.6 to 99%. Dihydrogen yields ranged from 27 to 88% by methane cracking. ![]() ![]() Photocatalysis produced dihydrogen (H 2) with generation rate higher than 100 μmol h −1. We found that water pollutants can be degraded with an efficiency ranging from 71.7 to 100%, notably by heterogeneous Fenton catalysis. Structure characterization is done by Brunauer–Emmett–Teller isotherm, thermogravimetry, X-ray diffraction and photoelectron spectroscopy. Common catalysts include biomass-derived materials, metal–organic frameworks, non-noble metals nanoparticles, nanocomposites and enzymes. Here we review environmental photocatalysis, biocatalysis, and electrocatalysis, with focus on catalyst synthesis, structure, and applications. For example, catalysts derived from waste or inexpensive materials are promising for the circular economy. Environmental catalysis refers to green catalysts used to breakdown pollutants or produce chemicals without generating undesirable by-products. The energy crisis and environmental pollution have recently fostered research on efficient methods such as environmental catalysis to produce biofuel and to clean water.
